Living On Your Own

Do you want to have a pet in your rental unit?

Does your landlord allow pets?

Always ask before you get a pet. Some rental properties have no-pet policies. There may be restrictions on the size, type or number of pets you can have. Emotional Support Animals and Service Animals are types of animals that landlords must always allow. You should let your landlord know if you have an Emotional Support or Service Animal.

Be kind to your pet

Will your pet like living in a small apartment? Large dogs need lots of space and generally do not do well in apartments.

Will your pet like living close to strangers? Dogs that bark or are aggressive are not a good choice for apartment settings.

Do you have time to walk your dog or clean your cat’s litterbox?

Can you afford your pet?

Pets can be expensive. Before getting a pet, make sure you have money in your budget for pet food, vet visits, and other things your pet will need.

Your landlord will expect you to:

A. Keep your pet on a leash and under your control when outside of your unit.

B. Make sure your pet is well behaved and friendly to neighbors.

C. Pay for any damages to your rental unit caused by your pet.
