3. I Sent In My Application.

What's Next?

Your landlord may request additional information.

When reviewing your application, your new landlord may ask for more information from you. They may ask for documents that verify your income, copies of your social security award letter, or a copy of your photo identification. It is very important that you supply the requested information immediately. If you do not respond to the landlord in a timely fashion they may mark your application as incomplete and give the unit to the next person in line.

Follow Through & Follow Up

Ask the landlord when they will decide on your application. Checking back frequently during this process will prevent your application from being denied because they could not reach you. Always be polite and respectful when talking to anyone in the rental office.

Your landlord will contact you if your application has been accepted.

After your application is accepted you will be offered a lease on the unit. Several things will happen at that time.

  1. You will be asked to pay a deposit on the unit. If you do not have money to pay the deposit, immediately look for help. Do you have a family member who can help? Ask your Case Manager, Personal Service Worker (PSW), Director Support Professional (DSP), or other members of your support team for help in finding out about local community assistance programs.
  2. You will be asked to sign a lease on the unit. It is a good idea to ask a family member or member of your support team to go to the leasing meeting with you. They can help you remember all of the information that will be given. You should be prepared to pay your first month’s rent when you sign your lease.
  3. Your new landlord will set a move-in date and provide you with keys to your unit. It is recommended that you take photos of the unit and note anything that is not working or damaged before you move in.

Congratulations on your success in finding a new rental unit! Please refer to the next section on this website for things you need to know to be a great tenant!

The Move-In Process

Check your unit carefully and make a list of any damages or things that are not working before you move your belongings into your new unit. Keep this list in a safe place. It is a good idea to take photos of anything that is not in good condition. This will prevent you from being charged for damages that you did not cause.

If you are responsible to pay for your electricity, or other utilities, do not forget to go to the local utility company and ask to have the utilities put in your name. There will be a utility deposit required.
